I’ve been working on this blog post for a looooong time. And even now, there’s more I feel I need to add to really do this topic justice. It’s dear to my heart and the core of how I live and what I teach.
At the end of the day though, you can’t just read an article to understand Tantra. You have to practice it and live it. My hope is that this article will inspire you to do just that…
So let's dip our toes in...and start by looking at what Tantra isn't...
TANTRA YOGA MISCONCEPTION
I’ve been teaching Tantra Yoga for over two years and practicing for over four. When I hold my yoga classes & events though, I don’t always refer to it as Tantric…sometimes I call it Hatha Yoga…or just Yoga.
Why is that?
Well, Tantra Yoga isn't really a recognised yoga “style”…people don’t know what to make of it. OR, they have a preconceived idea about what they think Tantra is.
Take for example my first ever workshop: I called it “Introduction to Tantric Yoga” and I had an amazing response from people, so much so I scheduled a second event.
I could be wrong, but I have a sneaking suspicion that what attracted (some) people’s interest was the word “tantric” in the event name. Would I have had the same response if I'd called it "Introduction to Hatha Yoga", maybe...maybe not.
One of my friends who came along offered to “lead the orgy sessions” and another text me the day before the workshop to check if he should bring lube or I was supplying it!
Granted, these comments were made by old friends of mine in the name of fun but they do highlight a general impression floating around out there about tantra.
The word Tantra it seems, is a word that is synonymous with sex for a lot of people. And not just any sex... but instead a more wild type of sex. While this isn’t incorrect, it is also a long way from the truth.
And can I just say, even if it was all about sex why is it that seeking to enhance our sexuality is immediately considered dirty/ kinky/ funny? This really needs to be questioned…but that’s a whole other blog post!
SO WHAT IS TANTRA YOGA THEN?
Tantra Yoga offers a holistic perspective on reality. It explains in straight forward terms how you (the microcosm) are connected to the rest of Universe (the macrocosm). And it gives you practices, methods and knowledge to explore this connection for yourself.
Hatha Yoga, Laya Yoga and Kundalini Yoga all fall under the broader Tantra Yoga umbrella.
Tantra yoga is an energy based system that allows you to plug into infinite energies that exist all around you. What does that mean in practical terms though? Well…
If you want to feel more vital & have abundant energy to live each day to the fullest —> Tantra Yoga can help.
If you want to enhance your creativity, feel more confident or experience more love in your life? —> Tantra Yoga can help.
- If you need the courage to activate positive change in your life and to express your hearts desires —> Tantra Yoga can help.
- If you want to feel a deeper sense of trust and connection with the world around you and feel that "life wants me here and wants me to thrive” —> Tantra Yoga can help.
Tantra is about understanding how the universe is constructed and learning to work with it rather than against it.
While all the sounds quite deep and philosophical, the good news is, is that Tantra is actually very accessible. It's a spirituality for the modern times and the modern person. It doesn’t require you to live in a cave or leave your family or live a monk-like life.
In Tantra - life, in all its diversity and magnificence, is your teacher. It's all about cultivating deeper awareness within our everyday moments.
You can be a waitress, a hairdresser, a mum, an entrepreneur - anything! - and also be a practicing tantric.
Tantra says that everything in existence is allowed and to be appreciated as part of the total.
Everything has its place in this big crazy manifestation regardless of whether we judge it as good, bad, beautiful or ugly.
TANTRA YOGA & SEXUALITY
Tantra Yoga is definitely not all about sex! But yes, it does include & embrace sex, because Tantra is about transforming rather than suppressing or denying any aspect of our humanness.
When it comes to the sexual component of Tantra - Tantric Sexuality - it’s all about understanding the sexual drive as a natural and potent part of our human make up. It's about learning to channel this energy in positive and harmonious ways.
Think about it: sexual energy = creative energy.
Sex is what brings you into being after all. Sex created you and I and our whole human family! What could be more natural and creative than that!?
But tantric love-making isn't jusr about enhancing pleasure for pleasures sake - there is a bigger focus at play.
Instead, tantric sexuality is about using this precious and core energy in the direction of healing, love, connection, presence, reverence and transcendence.
It’s about seeing sexuality as a divine gift and gateway into oneness.
TANTRA YOGA AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
The path of tantra and tantric sexuality is about the unfolding of your souls journey. It's a path to spiritual enlightenment rather than just sexual fulfillment.
And it's not for the faint hearted.
It takes you into some uncomfortable places and demands honesty, vulnerability and personal responsibility.
It asks you to look deeply into yourself and question your beliefs, your attachments, your suffering.
Tantra, is a no pain no gain scenario. But its pain of the good kind…the kind that expands and elevates.
As Eckhart Tolle says, “Suffering is necessary, until you realise its not”.
At the end of the Tantric path is the same promise of all spiritual paths: freedom from suffering, lasting happiness, eternal life.
