Welcome to Part 2 of the ‘Where Yoga Can Take You Series’ which is all about sharing with you worldly places I’ve visited thanks to having a ‘yoga mindset’ towards life.
Remember a yoga mindset is unique to you, but essentially it's about living with presence, following your truth and seeking to understand yourself and life to the deepest level - read more in Part#1 of this series.
Part#2 of this blog series brings us to the idyllic holiday destination that is Thailand!
Palm trees & tropical water, delicious food, full, half & quarter moon parties…I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.
But what you might not realise, is away from where the drunk Aussies and Brits are behaving badly, you’ll find some incredible pockets of spiritual richness.
The first time I visited Thailand was way back in 2004 for a 3-week holiday, (when my mindset was more party than zen!)
I was with a dear friend of mine and we had THE BEST time…we hung on beaches, drank cocktails every night, rode elephants. I remember thinking at the time how cool it would be to live there.
Fast forward some 8 years and it turns out the Universe heard that little desire of mine and I found myself returning to Thailand for a 3-month stint. This time, with a very different focus to that first visit…
hello spiritual richness!
This time round, I was there for a 3-month, 6-day a week, 500+ hour yoga teacher training program.
The yoga school where I’ve had most of my practice & training is on Koh Phangan. Yep, same island as the full moon parties.
However! The yoga school is on the opposite side of the island and relatively unscathed by all the debauched goings-on on the South-Eastern point each month.
In recent years, over on the North-Western side of the island, there has been an explosion of yoga schools, meditation retreats, dark domes, dancers, teachers and healers of all kinds.
I have a friend who referred to it as 'sexy-enlightenment island' and that pretty well sums it up!
This little pocket now has quite a strong spiritual resonance now and more and more seekers, teachers & healers are congregating there.
So this blog post is just to introduce this Thai nook to you in case the idea of a self-discovery holiday hasn't occurred to you before.
Ever considered a 'Self Discovery' Holiday?
What I’m describing here, is an opportunity to get away, lounge on beaches & sip coconuts WHILE AT THE SAME TIME have an experience that brings more peace and understanding to your life after the holiday is over.
Rather than just relaxing and feeling good for a week or two, why not take a break from the daily grind & western society and…
- Sign up for a yoga course & investigate the meaning of your life a little more deeply?
- Seek out an intuitive healer who can help you remove physical & mental blocks that keep you stuck in bodily pain and self-limited belief patterns?
- Take part in a conscious dance class or femininity workshop where you can explore conscious movement & sexuality?
The possibilities are endless on Koh Phangan.
All up, I’ve now spent some 9-months living amongst this spiritual community where I had the privilege of yoga & meditation being my sole focus each day.
Sounds pretty dreamy and cruisey yes? Well, yes… and in other ways no!
Just in case you decide to go on a self-discovery holiday as I'm suggesting, you should know that with intense yoga practice and healing, comes a sizeable amount physical & emotional purification…
What do I mean by purification? I mean breaking through physical, emotional & mental blocks that keep you from your full potential.
And that can be painful and uncomfortable. But this is 'good pain', the kind that is necessary and important if you're wanting to embrace your wholeness and live a rich & meaningful life.
Don't let this talk of purification scare you off! Remember:
So go be a butterfly my dear! Go visit this crazy beautiful island paradise, go explore, go learn about life, go dance, go heal.
And if you really have to, you can always take time out from the yoga & the healing to go to the full moon party. It's just around the corner after all.
I'm not encouraging you. My hope would be that after all the yoga, meditation & inner exploration, that it's the LAST thing you feel like.
But if you feel the party pull, go for it.
I'll admit I went and had a sober look on one occasion. It was quite fascinating to witness all the energy in motion of that event. Unlike my 2004 holiday though, I didn't last long. All up I think I was in and out of the party hub in less than an hour.
Because when you start discovering your inner world and the more subtle aspects of life you don't need so much stimulus and intensity to feel good.
In fact, when you start to understand how precious and powerful your life energy is, and start to experience the natural high of spiritual practice, the last thing you'd want to do is numb yourself at a full moon party.
Over to you now!
Have you ever travelled somewhere to detox, meditate or explore life more deeply?
Have you ever considered devoting time to healing and personal growth - a ’spiritually-focused’ holiday?
- How do you think an intensive yoga experience might help you to create more conscious way of life?
Of course, if a holiday or taking time out for self-discovery is just not a possibility for you at this time, I'll be sharing what I've learned in my yoga classes, private sessions, workshops, retreats and blog.
