Soften: Slowing Down - Opening Up - Letting Go
A FEMININE YOGA WEEKEND for women
2-DAY RETREAT: DATES FOR 2019, TBC
Abbotsford Convent, melbourne
Are you craving an opportunity to take things at a slower pace and reconnect with yourself in a deeper way than everyday life allows?
Curious to explore an approach to yoga and life that genuinely supports and nourishes you as a woman: physically, emotionally and mentally?
Do you want to reframe how you regard your softness and sensitivity so that it can be your superpower rather than your stumbling block?
Then join me for this unique yoga retreat focused on exploring, elevating and embodying your ‘yin’ energy.
Because we live in a hard and fast world.
As women, our whole lives we’re encouraged to be strong, independent and self-sufficient (yang).
Being productive, efficient and what we ‘do’ in the world is much more highly valued than who we are, what we feel.
Being soft, emotional or too introverted (yin) is often regarded with a degree of negativity and is seen as something we best overcome if we want to get ahead in life.
As a result of living this way, we feel stressed, exhausted and wrestle internally with this nagging sense of being broken; of feeling like there’s something inherently wrong with us.
You have thoughts circulating that say:
Why can’t I keep up/ get ahead/ feel ‘enough’?
Why am I so emotional?
Why is my body so unreliable, so tense, so unsexy?
Life feels a long way from joyous or pleasurable, right?
I’m here to help you understand & know that there’s nothing wrong with you for feeling any of this…
and ALL your feminine ways - are beautiful and powerful.
It just takes a bit of rewiring of our nervous systems and our beliefs in order to fully grasp this.
It takes learning to value the yin.
How This Retreat Came To Be - My Story
I’m Kate, your host for this retreat.
For the most part, I’m a mother to my gorgeous little boy Ari but in spaces in and around that, I’m a passionate Feminine Embodiment Yoga Teacher and Women’s Health Advocate.
I believe that soft is powerful. But I didn’t always.
Let me tell you - there’s been SO many times in my life where I’ve felt lost, confused and despairing at how soft and sensitive I felt. For the majority really.
When I discovered tantric spirituality back in 2011 I thought I’d finally got to crux of what was troubling me.
Hooray! This will ‘fix’ me.
I threw myself into a dedicated and intense spiritual practice, became a teacher of the system I so believed in and made a lot of changes in my life to uphold the teachings I’d taken in as gospel.
And in many ways, I felt a lot better in myself.
But something was still missing…
Despite all the hatha yoga and meditation, all too often, I’d find myself collapsing into emotional despair and struggling with low self confidence and fatigue.
I’d pick myself up again after these lows, adopt a positive way of thinking about what was upsetting me, and continue on…
It took a really challenging post-partum period with Ari for me to finally wake up to what the real issue was…
For me to finally BREAK.
Break-Open that is.
The issue for me was, and what i dare say lies beneath the MAJORITY OF THE discontent and struggle you are experiencing in your life is:
Not knowing how to embrace, nurture and protect your yin essence and therefore,
Living out of alignment with your female body, heart and soul.
Which is depleting and unsatisfying on every level.
And it’s the default unfortunately in our predominantly masculine world.
Learning to soften and value the yin as a way of life has allowed me to embrace my softness as my superpower and it’s why I’ve designed this retreat - to help you know that, and FEEL that, too.
Softening has transformed my relationship with my body and my emotions and allowed me to get a much truer picture of what I represent in the world.
It’s brought me the self-confidence, self-love and self-belief that I’ve long been looking for.
Discovering Feminine Embodiment Yoga was my way ‘in’ to myself and back to my softness. And this deeply nourishing practice is the foundation of this retreat.
If my story resonates, join me for this ‘yinward’ journey & reclaim your softness as your strength.
Softening: Discovering Your ‘yin’
In order to Soften and come to value your yin nature, there are three things you need to do:
Learn To Trust The Pace of Your Body Rather Than Your Mind
Become Receptive To Your Own Energy & Inner Reality
Unhook From Cultural Programming & Self-Negating Beliefs that keep you rushing and unable to relax.
This is what the Soften Retreat experience stands to help you with - whether its the start of a this journey for you, a refresh or a continuation.
What is The Yin?
The ‘yin’ represents the feminine in Chinese philosophy - it is soft, slow, passive and yielding.
While yin and yang are opposing to one another they are also complementary. We need both for balance.
The ‘Yin’ is greatly lacking and undervalued in our society.
Because it represents the feminine, and women are the embodiment of the feminine, this undervaluing leads to detrimental effects on our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It erodes our self-worth.
Learning to value the yin is about learning to truly honour, value and love yourself as a woman.
Feminine Embodiment Yoga versus Most Yoga
Most yoga that you’ll find out there on the market is rooted in a masculine tradition, initially designed for and practiced by men - I’m talking ashtanga, vinyasa, hatha and all their variations.
I’d been practicing and teaching traditional hatha yoga for a number of years before I came to Feminine Yoga.
While the traditional style helped me a lot and is something I still partake in, Feminine Yoga was what really allowed me to fully embrace myself as a woman - my body, my emotions, my sensitivity, my view point - my entire experience of the world suddenly felt valid where before it had felt ‘not normal’ somehow.
Feminine Embodiment Yoga = a style of practice that has been designed specifically for the female experience.
It meets the cyclical nature of our biochemistry (our incredible womb life in all its phases), the structure of our female skeleton and musculature (our wider hips, our vaginas, our breasts) and also invites and allows our sensual nature to be expressed.
The most obvious differences compared with traditional yoga are:
Emotional expression - your feelings are invited:
Rather than have to centre yourself or squash what you feel inside, this practice allows you to go right into it without ‘fixing’. All your emotions are welcome this space. You’re encouraged to feel what you feel (radical and liberating) as you move and sound (with your sigh and your voice) whatever is stirring in you throughout the practice - big or small, pleasurable or otherwise - this practice guides us back to trust in what we feel as much as (and ultimately more!) than what we think. And that extends waaaay off the mat and into everyday life.
Spiralling movements: Traditional yoga, generally speaking, tends to be very up and down, very linear due to its masculine origins and masculine energy moving in this way. Feminine Yoga on the other hand, works with a lot of spiralling movements to reflect how the feminine energy moves (feminine energy = creative energy, have a look at the crown of a babies head as an example of this!). Moving in this manner allows our energy to flow the way it naturally wants to which brings with it a release of the physical and mental tension from this powerful lifeforce energy being contained and restricted.
The emphasise in a feminine yoga practice is on guiding you into your body, and into yourself. Rather than lots of instruction on alignment or where to focus (which keep you in your thinking mind and externally focused), feminine yoga gives you space to intuitively move and breath in a way that feels most natural and releasing for you in that moment. This allows you to connect with and attune to your inner world so you can receive higher guidance and clarity.
No striving or pushing:
Feminine Yoga emphasises YOU as the ultimate authority on your body and what feels right for you. This removes any need to ‘keep up’ and teaches us somatically what it feels like to truly listen to our body versus overriding her in order to make it into a certain shape.
With this being a women’s only space combined with the striving aspect of yoga removed, Feminine Yoga makes way for authentic connection and sharing with other women which can be deeply soothing for our hearts and souls. Feminine Yoga is an opportunity to drop all the “masks” and just be authentically a woman, in all your depth and beauty. This helps us to grasp that beyond the roles and titles and the chores and obligations of our lives we are all manifestations of the same divine feminine source. We are all unique and powerful in our own right and all just finding our way home to ourselves.
About this unique & transformative weekend
Throughout our 2-days together, you can expect to enjoy:
Numerous feminine embodiment yoga sessions: Our gentle but enlivening practices will be designed around the themes of slowing down, opening up and letting go which will bring deep replenishment for your body & mind.
Detailed exploration, elevation and embodying of the yin: Sharings and group discussions to explore the ‘yin’ principle: what it is, why it’s so important and how valuing it can lead us to feeling more confident, sensual and alive as women.
Time and space for you to tap into your inner wisdom: as part of and in addition to our longer practices, there will be movement, meditations and partnered practices intended to help you drop into your body (and out of your thinking mind) as much as possible throughout our time together in order for you to get clarity on where you are at and how you want to move forward from here.
Putting pen to paper: pauses for journalling and reflection exercises will be dotted throughout the retreat to help you anchor insights that come through the sharings and practices.
Sacred sisterhood: have the opportunity to be seen, heard and held in circle by other women in a safe, non-judgemental and supportive space. A deeply healing experience.

I’m a complete beginner to yoga! Is that ok?
Feminine Embodiment Yoga is very approachable - the emphasis of this practice is on how your body FEELS rather than on how it looks. Women of all ages, fitness, flexibility and yoga experience are welcome at this retreat.
I’ve done a lot of yoga in the past. How is this yoga different?
Feminine Embodiment Yoga has only evolved recently. It was created by Devashi Shakti who is a visionary feminine leader who has been supporting women for over 20 years in the field of feminine awakening and embodying their fullest potential as women.
One of the major differences between traditional yoga and feminine yoga is the breath/sound rhythm used in the feminine style to help bring emotional release and expression. This open expression, frees up space in our bodies and mind by allowing our inner world to come out in this safe and sacred environment. Feminine Yoga also uses a lot of spiralling motions to allow us to tap into our feminine energy which naturally moves this way.
I’m pregnant, can I still attend?
Feminine Yoga can be very beneficial in pregnancy and as a way to prepare for birth and motherhood. ’Valuing the yin’ is so important in these experiences.
That saying, this is not specifically a pregnancy retreat but if you feel the call to attend I’d love to have you part of the group.
And please be aware that pregnancy is contra-indicated in the first trimester.
What are the benefits of the practice?
releasing stress and tension from the body and mind
anxiety reduction & relief from nervous system over-stimulation
hormonal and emotional balance
creating menstrual ease
awakening your lower body and connecting with your primal energies (pelvic intelligence)
improved vitality and grounding (feeling stable and trusting)
sensuality as a spirituality practice
increased confidence, magnetism and joy
healthy, supportive sisterhood
